Compton Healthcare Coalition
Healthcare Advocacy for the City of Compton, CA
Coalition History: The 2018, Los Angeles County Health Profile on the Compton Community highlighted substantial health disparities experienced by the residents of Compton, and placed Compton in the 9th percentile on California’s Health Places Index Score.
In the Fall of 2021, Peace In Education responded to the LA County Health Profile by initiating community dialogues to identify the needs and service gaps in the city. Through a series of community dialogues with civic leaders, community organizations, and residents, the need for local services and the challenges residents face traveling beyond city limits for care was amplified. Many residents rely on public transportation, taking a series of buses to reach a hospital. Of paramount need was an emergency medical clinic within the City of Compton.
The Future of the Coalition will be determined by the Compton Community. As members work together to improve the quality of health for their community, they invite your voice, your energy, and your ideas. A coalition, managed by a collaboration of community members, will speak forcefully to bring about the change that most benefits the City of Compton.
Coalition Beginnings: The formation of a Healthcare Coalition was initiated in 2021 by Peace in Education (PiE), a non-profit community mediation center in Los Angeles County.
The function of the coalition is to create a unified voice of local organizations, healthcare providers, local residents, and civic leaders, and amplify that voice to effect change and improve community wellness.
This is accomplished through community dialogues to identify local needs or gaps in healthcare service and apply that information toward public policy creation & decision-making. Relevant data collected from the community is used to inform decision-making within the coalition.
The coalition focuses efforts on unifying the community voice; educating members in civic processes, access to resources, self-care, nutrition, and environmental contributors; and encourages collaborative support between members to effect improved health outcomes.
